How does the diagram show the relationships between primary, secondary, and tertiary colors? Kelly showed the relationship between her primary colors by giving those colors a star. Secondary colors were labeled with a hexagon, and tertiary colors labeled with a square.
How does the diagram incorporate photographs of color? What information does this add to the diagram? Kelly inserted her photographs on the column to the right of her rectangular diagram. Adding texture to her design.
How does the diagram explain saturation, color temperature, and contrasting hues? Kelly’s diagram, explains saturation, color temperature and contrasting hues through the visuals presented in her diagram as well as the typography put in place to label throughout her design.
Do you feel that typography is well-integrated into this diagram design? Explain. I do feel Kelly did a good job when implementing typography in her design. She uses typography to provide additional labels to help the viewer better understand her diagram.
Are there any areas you think could be improved in this design? This was one of my favorite designs which is why I chose to critique it. I felt it was a very strong example for the assignment given.
What are the strongest components of this diagram design? I think Kelly tackled this assignment in a great way. It’s a great visual for the eyes and the additional labels make it easy to read and understand. Great execution overall in my opinion.
The color theory diagram I created shows the relationships between primary, secondary, and tertiary colors in two ways the first is I have added labels to each as such; PH, SH, TH. Additionally I have added lines that connect each primary color to each other and the same with secondary and tertiary as well as complementary. To better help the reader understand the lines and what they represent I provided a line color key below the diagram. I was able to embed the photographs I took and add them to my diagram to give the viewer a real world example of where these colors may be seen. Some of the photographs also add texture to the diagram. When creating my diagram I first started with the original color swatch on the smallest color circle. Then presenting the tint of each hue, followed by the shade. I created a word key at the bottom to help with any confusion for the viewer. When it comes to inspiration I more drew inspiration from the color wheel part 1 I wanted to keep the simplicity of the diagram while adding my own design to it. When it came to typography I decided to keep all the labels the simple Myriad Pro helping to keep it simple and distinguishing it from the color labels and the key which I made Apple Chancery to make it more appealing and a bit more fancy.
Describe the overall width of the letters in this typeface design. Overall, do the letters feel normal, wide, or condensed? Are there any letters that stand out as not fitting in with this pattern? How would you make improvements? I would say the width of Diana’a typeface design is normal. The uppercase letters have a width of two squares while the lowercase have a width of one square. I think all of the letters presented in Diana’s modular type design. There is nothing I would change about this design! One of my favorites, great job Diana!
Describe the overall weight of the letters in this typeface design. Overall, do the letters feel normal, bold, extra bold, thin, extra thin? Are there any letters that stand out as not fitting in with this pattern? How would you make improvements? Overall, I would say the uppercase letters have a more bold weight oppose to the lowercase letters which have a more normal/thin weight to them.
Describe the overall contrast of the letters in this typeface design. Is there no contrast (all parts of each letter are handled with even weight), low contrast (some parts of each letter are a little thinner/thicker than others), or high contrast (some parts of each letter are a much thinner/thicker than others) Are there any letters that stand out as not fitting in with this pattern? How would you make improvements? Diana did a great job contrasting the lower and uppercase letters by changing the width of the letters with the squares utilized in this design. She was able to make the uppercase letters double the size and weight of the lowercase.
Describe the overall posture of the letters in this typeface design. Overall, do the letters feel upright or angled? If parts of letters are angled, which parts are they? Are there any letters that stand out as not fitting in with this pattern? How would you make improvements? When it comes to posture all of the letters have an upright feel to their design. Possible letters that slightly give an angled feel due to the design are letters such as “K” and “X” because of the diagonal design, but to me they still look upright.
Does the letterspacing (space between each letter) in the pangram feel even? Does the tracking (space between each word) in the pangram feel even? How would you make improvements? I think the spacing between the “T”, “Q”, “B”, “J”, and “L” in the pangram need to be adjusted to make the spacing even. I think the shaping of the letter leaves extra white space that just needed to be adjusted to become more evenly spaces to the eye.
Finally, do you feel that this typeface is legible when viewed in the pangram? Why or why not? Which gestalt grouping principles (closure, continuity, proximity, similarity, symmetry, simplicity) are affecting the legibility of this typeface when all the letters are viewed together in a sentence? This typeface is legible when viewing the pangram because Diana did a good job of continuity and similarity throughout the design, as well as symmetry with upper and lowercase letters.
The shape I decided to utilize for this modular type design was a circle. Each letter encompasses different points seen with the circle. These circles utilize proximity and lines to form each letter. When it came to the framework of this design. I decided to keep it simple, I pulled inspiration from one of the typefaces showed in our reading by Herbert Bayer called universal, at the Bauhaus.
To produce this simplistic look I kept the weight and width light and thin, allowing each point to form a thin line that leads the viewers eyes and allows them to distinguish each letter. When creating my upper and lowercase letters I made it apparent to contrast them which lead me to make the lowercase letters half that of the uppercase, minus any ascenders or descenders the lowercase letters may have.
A variation I had to make while creating this type design was not having much space in the e, I chose to do this so I could follow the upper to lower case letter ratio. Also, the placement variation when it comes to the decenders of such letters as g, j, q and y.
This simple typeface takes me back to the days I first started learning to read and write. I have been spending a lot of time with my niece who just started kindergarten and while working on this project she kept coming over and telling me how good I was doing.
I would say proximity, simplicity, continuity, and symmetry played a huge part when it came to the success of this modular design. Proximity plays a part when it comes to the individual letters and the closeness we see through each point/circle that makes up the entire letter. When coming up with this design I wanted to have a simplistic look allowing the viewer to be able to make up each letter and not just see circles. Continuity is seen throughout this design as each letter follows a set of rules depending on upper or lowercase letters. Symmetry is seen through the evenness, consistency and uniformity throughout this modular design.
When it comes to my modular design I positioned the ascenders just above the mid point of the cap height and x-height. While, descenders extend by three circles from the base line. Uppercase letters extend from the base line to the cap height and lowercase letters extend from the baseline to the x-height.
I chose to use this sample 4 typeface because I liked the tall skinny aesthetic the letters in this typeface give. I also liked the little hook seen on the letters such as ‘C’, ‘G’, ‘J’, ‘S’, ect. When it comes to using the pen tool to draw each letter in this typeface it was super time consuming and very detail orientated. The pen tool tutorials provided a great guide when it came to this project. As mentioned this design project was very time consuming and one challenge I came across was no matter how many times I would try to redo the letter or move the anchored points there were some letters I just couldn’t get to match up perfectly. Overall it was a great challenge for my mind and focus.
When it comes to type to me the biggest principle that relates to type is point, line, and plane. Each individual letter has points that form lines which ultimately creates text. When it comes to 2D type plane is utilized while more 3D type utilizes volume. Typography allows for infinite outcomes when bringing in scale, texture, framing, hierarchy, rhythm and balance. Scale allows you to size your type utilizing different sizes and bringing awareness to the space. When utilizing texture when it comes to the design of type texture can be used used for visual effects whether its 2D or 3D texture brings an appeal to the design of type. Rhythm and balance allow for both stability and surprise while designing type. While hierarchy utilizes order of importance when it comes to organizing type.
Matthew Carter was my favorite designer interviewed in the film. He has so much background when it comes to type. Throughout the film he gives insight on his family history as his father studied type as well. Although it wasn’t his plan to follow in his fathers foot steps he got an internship and was working with creating font by hand for about a year. This was one of the reasons his story stuck with me. I was unaware that type was made by hand with steel. Throughout the film he talks about his experience and things that have changed in modern day. Overall Matthew Cater is my favorite designer because how passionate he is about typography as he is interviewed in the film.
Hierarchy is established in this word map as seen in Eddie’s two main categories ‘sports’ and ‘video games’ under these main categories we see additional categories pertaining to three different sports and consoles. Eddie uses font size and color to establish adequate hierarchy throughout his word map.
Is variation of scale is used effectively?
I think scale is utilized when it comes to this word map because of the different font sizes utilized throughout the world map distinguishing each category. This is a concept that could have been utilized more but overall I think he did a good job.
Are variations of value, color, spacing, placement, and/or other signals used effectively?
When it comes to color, spacing, and placement I think Eddie did a great job as he distinguishes the two main groups, giving them similar yet different colors. He then breaks up his sport collection into three groups evenly distributing them from each other. He utilizes color when it comes to organizing his collections into categories. Each group is separated by white space and we are able to distinguish the two main groups as their own due to the white spacing separating them as well and the color.
Does the composition feel balanced overall? Are symmetrical or asymmetrical strategies employed?
Eddie did a good job when creating this symmetrical word map, keeping it balanced and easy to follow working with the white space as well as color.
Does this work feel like a self-portrait? Why or why not? What does the word map tell you about the person who made it?
I think this does portray a self portrait as these are all the collections that Eddie surrounds himself with and they are a big part of who he is today.
Finally, does the overall design and organization of their web portfolio and blog provide a clear presentation of this project as well as other work from the class? Why or why not? Can you use some of the design principles we discussed this semester in your explanation?
Overall I think Eddie’s design was a good representation of this project and followed the guidelines. His blog was organized and gave insight on his thought process while creating this design.
When creating this design I first input all my collections onto the world map. I think took the time to create different categories that each collection fit into. Following with choosing a font that would represent the group appropriately and be appealing to the eye. I wanted to use all different fonts for each group making them unique to that specific group. When it comes to hierarchy there were a few different ways it was used in my word map. For example in general I made the name of the group larger than the collections places within that group. More specifically I chose to bold and enlarge collections that really relate to me for example “inspirational people” “leopard print anything” “clothing” “bags”. When it comes to the order of importance the things that were important to me were either in larger font or bold. For example, “purse necessities” “face masks” “face filters” “hobbies” “jewelry”. When it came to rhythm and balance this was something I was working out throughout the whole project. Since I started with all my collections on my board already then grouped them it took a little more time to position the groups. There is 20 groups as I am 20 years old this was not purposeful but is very convenient. When making this word map I wanted to in a way show how these concepts are displayed in my mind which is why the rhythm is both scattered yet structured. When first taking on this assignment I wasn’t sure how to go about it with only text, after actually tackling the project it was much easier than expected and it is cool to see these collections that surround me in my day to day life on paper and actually in front of me. The type tool was a huge part of this mapping process which allowed me to type out lines of text and place them throughout my word map positioning them how I wanted throughout my word map. When it comes to texture there are various textures seen throughout the word map as each group has a different font. Texture is impacted by the difference in the thickness of the lines used both horizontal and vertical as well as the white smooth background space that separates each group.
This photo was taken on the first walk I have been able to do since we have had good air quality again. I chose to photograph the power lines while on my walk because it was the first time I had actually noticed the noise that came from them. The principal that is found in this photo is line, these continuous lines meet and cross creating a stable structure for the power lines. Framing plays a part when it comes to this photo, when taking the photo I framed it so the sky would be the background rather than trees and other elements that were presented in the background. The texture of the clouds as the background creates a soft simple background.
These were some bigger rocks seen on top of the smaller rocks near construction on my walk. I chose to take this photo because I thought the coloring of the rock was unusual and the little holes in the rocks demonstrated a good example of point. These rocks can be seen as points and the smaller holes on the rocks can be seen as individual points as well. Framing changes the interpretation because if the photo was zoomed out it may not be as easy for the eye to spot that rock and the points will become less visible to the eye. This photo displays a solid, rough, crater like texture seen by the eye.
This photo was taken on my walk, same place as the power lines. I took this image originally for the numbers presented in the full image I decided to crop the image and liked the rugged unusual look of the nails and metal on the wood. The nails create individual points. As stated, I cropped the image so framing played a huge part in the outcome of this image. The interpretation would be changed if the image was viewed in its full frame, in my opinion this cropped version looks more interesting.
This photo was taken in the park, I chose this photo to show volume. I took a few different photos in this scenery playing with the angles and lighting and I particularly liked this one because it actives the edge, shows the hight and width as well as depth. The trees create a triangle like figure occupying the whole frame. The texture seen in this photo is rough and crater like.
This photo was taken in the park, these tall skinny trees gave off a creepy unusual abandoned vibe. The principal seen in this photo is line. Each tree standing tall creating a line. With smaller branches extending out creating their own form of line with leaves extending off. I think when it comes to framing this photo the interpretation can be changed depending on where the focus is. The textures presented in this photo are rough and crater like.
This photo was taken at a park while on my walk. The park had a creepy abandoned feel to it which is why I chose to capture this photo of the bridge at the park that had lines. I chose to darken the shadows when editing to play with the dark creepy vibe that the park was giving. When it came to framing I particularly didn’t do anything special to frame the image but I think if cropped the interpretation of the meaning could change. The bridge is made of wood and the rough wood texture is shown in the photo.
This is a plant I photographed while on my walk. This plant is made up of both lines and points but for this image I was more focusing on the points. Each point can be seen as their own, or they can be connected by lines and seen as a bunch. When it came to framing this is one I was a bit more structured on how I framed. I kept the background blurry and really wanted the focus to be on the points seen. I think if the frame was zoomed out it would change the interpretation of the image making it a more line prominent example.
This photo was taken on my walk, I chose to photograph this chain and lock because I found the location of the lock very unusual. It was tied around a post and locked, yet holding nothing shut. The chain and the lock are three dimensional objects exhibiting length, width and depth. When it came to framing for volume I decided to activate the edge of the photo. The texture seen throughout this photo is smooth in the foreground and has some rough texture in the background.
This photo was taken at the park, I decided to photograph this because I felt the spinning around the bar made for an unusual twist and demonstrated volume. The subject is a 3 dimensional object that demonstrates hight, depth and width. I cropped the frame of this photo to have a more clean cut photo. Things were still pretty crazy from the storm so there were tree branches everywhere. When it comes to texture the bars give a smooth texture while the background gives a rough like texture from the bark dust.
This photo was taken in a parking lot, this photo is a good representation of plane as it shows the path of a moving line that then meets another creating a shape. I think when it comes to framing the interpretation of the image would be the same however it is framed. The textures presented in this photo are rough cement like giving significant detail.
This photo was taken at a newly opened ross, I thought it was unusual because it is located on a little strip mall and each store had their own light post with the name of the store like a street sign. This is something I have not seen and I think it demonstrates a good representation of plane as the light post is a line that connects with two other lines that extend out. The “ross” name plate can be seen as a plane held together by two lines, creating this rectangular street sign aesthetic. The textures seen in this photo are soft, defined, sharp like textures.
This photo was taken in my apartments, I found it kind of unusual due to the circumstances. This was before our air quality was finally back to normal so I found it odd. This photo intrigued me because the way the lines move in a path, meet together and create other shapes within the window. This photo gives both a smooth and rough textured like look. When it comes to framing I think the interpretation could be changed depending on how it is framed, it could lead to the focus being changed.
Since quarantine I have become a plant mom with many plant babies this is one of my favorite plants that’s in my room by my bed. You don’t notice the growth everyday but when you do notice it, it blows your mind. Colors may change, texture may harden the crazy lines each leaf makes I love watching every part. This little baby was a little bush and now it has grown so tall. It’s a reminder each day to continue to better myself no matter how small the task because in the long run it will pay off.
What does this example tell us about you?
I think this example shows how quarantine has allowed us to appreciate the little things. This plant in a sense is a symbol of me from the start of quarantine I was a bush and now I have continued to better myself each day. I have learned so much, grown financially, mentally and physically.
Do you think a human being had a hand in the creation of this example? Why?
Most definitely, taking the time to water, re pot, give light to and love these plants is something I have learned to do.

Why do you love to look at this example?
This is a manifestation board I created to help me manifest and stay motivated when it comes to my goal of buying my own house sometime next year after graduation. I created it with the style, color, and appliances I would love to have in my first home.
What does this example tell us about you?
This board expresses my creativity as well as my drive for success. This tells you I’m a visual learner as the board incorporates all visuals.
Do you think a human being had a hand in the creation of this example? Why?
I personally created this and handpicked each photo that went on the board. Personalizing it to my liking.
Photo 2
Why do you love to look at this example?
This is a picture I just recently added to my room. I like to look at this example because it contrasts my room so much and adds a more neutral aspect bringing texture while corresponding to other prints throughout my room.
What does this example tell us about you?
I think this shows my appreciation for art within my room and allows you to get a sense of the busyness in this photo as well as throughout my room.
Do you think a human being had a hand in the creation of this example? Why?
Yes, I got it from my sister, so I am not totally sure who is the original artist, but I do know this artwork was created by someone. You can tell by the structure of the painting as well as the detail.

Why do you love to look at this example?
Crystals bring me a sense of empowerment. Weather looking at them, holding them. Cleansing them it’s amazing to be able to cleanse energy, manifest dreams, and be protected by these stones that come in different shapes, sizes, colors, texture. That is one of my favorite aspects of crystals is how different each crystal can be.
What does this example tell us about you?
I think the crystals as well as the plants shows how connected with the earth I am.
Do you think a human being had a hand in the creation of this example? Why?
Many crystals are developed in nature and used by humans, but you can also create your own if you wish to do so.

Why do you love to look at this example?
I like to watch this incent as it slowly burns, I find it therapeutic at times watching the smoke flow.
What does this example tell us about you?
I think it tells that I am a very relaxed laid-back person.
Do you think a human being had a hand in the creation of this example? Why?
When it comes to the structure of the burner, I do think a human has a hand in creating it. My guess would be something along the lines of ceramic. I think humans also shape the raw materials of the incent.
For our last unit project I was debating between doing a video again or the visual board and I decided to go with the visual board approach adding a black and white theme for the board. In this project I shed light on the socioeconomic biases when it comes to healthcare. Showing how people from low socioeconomic backgrounds and children are impacted directly, giving insight on what studies have found as well as connecting it to the current pandemic that has impacted so many lives. Lastly, I ended with ways people can personally help when it comes to this issue. I used Canva for the layout and free images.
